

A Movable Feast: The Culture of Food and Drink in China
Published by the Hong Kong Palace Museum and the Palace Museum, A Movable Feast: The Culture of Food and Drink in China is available in both Traditional Chinese and English. It centres on the concept of mobility in the rich 5,000-year food culture of China and endeavours to provide a new and nuanced perspective by exploring the movements of eating and drinking utensils across the spiritual, cultural, and physical worlds.
The publication is divided into three sections: “Crossing from Life to Death – Feeding the Spirits”, “Crossing Cultures – Nomadic Eating Practices”, and “Crossing Mountains and Lakes – Packing the Perfect Picnic”. Within these sections are six chapters written by a distinguished team of scholars and experts from the Hong Kong Palace Museum and around the world. These chapters illustrate how people have traversed the culinary landscape with food and eating utensils for 5,000 years, examining preparations for the afterlife, adaptations to foreign culinary practices, and the enjoyment of outdoor picnics.
The special exhibition of the same title is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Palace Museum and the Palace Museum. The exhibits mainly come from the Palace Museum and the Hong Kong Palace Museum. The British Museum, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Hong Kong Museum of Art, and the Hong Kong Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware have also provided a number of loans. The special exhibition runs at the Hong Kong Palace Museum from 19 March 2025 to 18 June 2025.
