"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" is the fourth part of Wang Dulu's "Crane-Iron Five-Part Series", set in the late Qing Dynasty, telling the love tragedy between Yu Jiaolong, the daughter of the Admiral of the Nine Gates, and Luo Xiaohu, a desert thief. Yu Jiaolong married into the Hanlin Mansion in order to maintain his family's reputation, but faked his death and fled because of his feelings for Luo Xiaohu, and finally left the desert due to a conflict of values. The novel integrates the contradiction between chivalry and aristocratic etiquette, interspersed with Manchu customs and the market, and is known as a monument in the history of martial arts novels.
