Special House: A novel about the fall of Hong Kong
On 25 December 1941, Hong Kong fell, and on 15 August 1945, Japan surrendered unconditionally. 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of Hong Kong's reopening, and it is of special significance to publish Couple's "Special House".
The study of Hong Kong literature must not bypass Lu Lun, whose masterpiece "Poor Alley" vividly portrays the living conditions of the low-class citizens in Hong Kong after the war.
"Special House" is not only Lu Lun's last novel, but also his work that took nearly 30 years to complete. The novel focuses on the experience of Lin Pak-cheung's family, and confronts the life and state of mind of Hong Kong citizens in the early days of World War II and Japanese occupation. It is a pity that "Special House" has been serialized in Ta Kung Pao since 1977 and has been obscure. The editor, Dr Pang Chi-man, had been worried about the situation, so he carefully examined the old newspapers, photocopied and reproofed them, and annotated them to make a contribution to the preservation of Hong Kong literary works.
