UPPERCITY: Hong Kong Footbridge Observation and Imagination
This book serves as the first comprehensive explanation and important record of the unique footbridge network planning in Hong Kong.
According to the Highways Department, Hong Kong boasts over a thousand footbridges, hence the title "City of a Thousand Bridges". These bridges have become integral to Hong Kong's unique urban landscape and our everyday life. They connect not only the people but also the glimpses of development history of our beloved city: from land reclamation to developments of new town, from old urban fabric to the comprehensive railway-oriented developments, all are closely tied by the ordinary footbridges.
This book explores the theme from the perspectives of architect and urban designer, starting with a broad view of urban space in Hong Kong and the process by which the city evolved into one defined by footbridges. The authors then delve into and observe their elevated pedestrian networks within the various local communities, from usage to their relationships with the neighborhoods. References are also made to global cases of footbridge planning and design. Finally, it raises the question of whether there are alternatives to just keep expanding the footbridge throughout the city, as global trend tends to embrace the street environments.
In recent years, footbridge construction has become a topic of interest in Hong Kong. However, it becomes clear that urban planning models are evolving all over the world, suggesting alternatives to remove cars from the city, thus the need for footbridges.
