James Wong Study - Stories of Popular Music
James Wong Study - Stories of Popular Music, the third book in the Conserving James Wong book series, takes a deep dive into James Wong’s private collection. It makes use of numerous writings, memos, manuscripts, and fax communication records to present behind-the-scene stories about the creative music-making process by James Wong and his colleagues. The double role of James Wong as a hands-on practitioner as well as a serious scholar and commentator on popular music endows the stories with gripping details and revealing insights.
Highlights include:
• James Wong’s subtly changing views on ‘what is music’ and ‘what makes good music’ over his creative life, presenting writings from his teenage days through to his doctoral thesis on the history of Cantopop completed just before he passed away in 2004.
• Lengthy exchanges with academic researchers on the essence of pop vs classical music, the infusion of ‘Chinese strands’ in Hong Kong pop, and the making of film music.
• An in-depth look into the key personnel and practices of the ‘art world’ of Hong Kong pop music through the collaborative experience with four prominent teacher/colleagues.
• Stories of the making of over 70 songs James Wong partook in - hits and misses, mainstream and eccentric, traditional and modern, favourites and forgotten.
Together they serve to open up the ‘black box’ of Hong Kong popular music making.
