Liang Ch’i-ch’ao and the Mind of Modern China
Liang Ch’i-ch’ao and the Mind of Modern China is written by United States historian Joseph R. Levenson. Levenson's first monograph traces the ideological transformation of Liang Ch’i-ch’ao, a modern Chinese intellectual, from the three stages of "Metamorphosis", "Brave New World", and "Reminiscences", and explores how he broke through from tradition and embraced progressivism and the modern West in the torment of history and values, but took the initiative to move towards the anachronism in the last decade of his life. The author's vision is not limited to individual thinkers, but the interaction between history and the individual runs through the book, constantly reflecting on history through the "inevitable inconsistencies" and "intellectual imperfections" in Liang's thought, revealing the vivid and complex features of modern Chinese intellectual history and the nature of its changes.
