Confucian China and Its Modern Fate: A Trilogy
The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press
Confucian China and Its Modern Destiny: A Trilogy is Levenson's masterpiece, focusing on the "cohesive and precarious intellectual world" of modern China under the onslaught of modernity. The book is divided into three volumes and was published between 1958 and 1965. The first volume, The Problem of Ideological Continuity, and the second volume, The Problem of the Decline and Fall of the Monarchy, discuss the demise of Confucian China and the rupture of tradition from the perspective of ideology and institutions, respectively. The third volume, The Problem of Historical Significance, examines how the wandering spirit of Confucianism provided continuity in a new sense to China that had undergone the modern revolution.
