The ten short stories contain all aspects of humanity: sacrifice, remorse, introspection, sympathy, faith, persistence, and foolishness. However, one of the main characteristics of the characters in the book is the pursuit of "self-redemption". More or less, they all go through a "cognitive shock" and then be reborn. They make progress because of introspection, and the path they choose is the path of self-redemption.
